The aim of this year's Patient Safety Awareness Week

Are you aware that Patient Safety Awareness Week is held every year during March? Many Americans are not aware of this fact, partially because this week of awareness is not as high-profile as some other awareness campaign observances are. For example, Breast Cancer Awareness Month occurs annually during October. This observance is highly-visible, due in great part to the “pink” campaign. Pink ribbons are worn during this month, pink products are sold and even NFL players wear pink shoes to show their support.

It is vitally important for Americans to understand that while Patient Safety Awareness Week is not as highly-visible as other awareness campaigns, it honors a critical issue. Numerous studies conducted in recent years confirm that medical mistakes are now among the top three causes of death in the U.S. Only heart disease and cancer kill more Americans than medical mistakes do. As a result, this awareness campaign needs to gain visibility and educate Americans broadly on the issue at hand.

This year, the National Patient Safety Foundation is focusing this week of awareness on the theme “United Through Safety.” This theme can be construed in a number of ways. It can illustrate that the medical community is united in its efforts to make patient safety a priority and it can illustrate that doctors and patients are united in making safety a priority during the course of their interactions. Similarly, it can illustrate unity of lawmakers and regulators responsible for ensuring the safety of the American public.

No matter how you view this year’s theme, consider acting upon it. Every time an American speaks up in regards to patient safety, the culture surrounding this issue changes for the better.
