At the scene of a car accident, what should you do?

In our last post, we talked about what your options are if you are at fault for a car accident. Motor vehicle collisions are scary, yet complex, matters and those who are involved in them need to consider all of their options carefully. Building off of what we wrote two weeks ago, let's take a look at what someone -- anyone -- should do in the immediate aftermath of a car accident.

One of the first things you are going to be inclined to do is become tense, nervous and angry. This is perfectly natural -- but fight this urge as best you can. Close your eyes, take a few deep breaths, focus, and get ready to deal with the accident that just happened. Remain at the scene and take care of a few things.

You need to check on the other people involved in the wreck and make sure they are okay. They may need medical attention. If so, call the police (and if you are certified or cleared to give the other people help, then do what you can to help them).

Eventually you will need to exchange information with the other people involved in the wreck. You'll also want to talk with witnesses of the crash and get their perspective on the event, as well as take photos of the wreckage from the scene. Further down the line, you will need to talk to your insurance company and deal with them, as well as get a damage estimate for your vehicle.
