How a truck driver's health, may negatively impact safety

For a truck driver, the daily challenges associated with one's occupation are often numerous and significant. Dealing with inclement weather, navigating through road construction sites and maneuvering safely through heavy rush-hour traffic are just a few of the hazards with which truck drivers must contend day in and out.

Additionally, the very nature of the trucking occupation means that a significant percentage of truck drivers are sedentary for the vast majority of the day, must rely on truck stops and fast-food restaurants for meal options and are forced to sleep in the cramped cabs of their trucks. Combined, these factors put truck drivers at an increased risk of suffering numerous adverse health problems and have resulted in truck drivers reporting high rates of obesity, Type 2 diabetes, sleep apnea, heart disease, stroke and joint and back pain.

Additionally, truck drivers’ poor health and high incidences of chronic diseases and medical conditions also endanger public safety as these drivers are at an increased risk of experiencing health and medical emergencies while operating large commercial vehicles.

Chronic health conditions and overall poor health also put truck drivers at an increased risk of feeling overly fatigued and either falling asleep at the wheel or failing to be as focused and vigilant as is necessary when driving a big rig that weighs several tons.

For individuals in and around the surrounding New York City area who have been involved in, or who have had a loved one involved in, a traffic accident with a large truck; it's important to discuss one's case with an attorney. A personal injury attorney will thoroughly review the facts of a case and provide strong legal advocacy while fighting to recover compensation.
