Overzealous and corrupt officers are out there

The police wield an awesome power. They have the ability to enforce the law and legally infringe upon your rights if they have probable cause or a warrant. Of course, they also are strictly forbidden from infringing upon your rights if they don't have the legal authority or backing to do so. This balance is critical: it is what separates a free society from a police state.

Given the tendency for power to corrupt those who wield it (though not all), it is imperative for those who are targeted by the police or for those who deal with the police to remember their rights -- and to remember that the police aren't perfect. They run afoul of the law too, and they may do so in such a way that makes them the target of legal action.

This is where the conversation transitions to the all-too-common incidents of police brutality and police misconduct. Sometimes a police officer thinks he or she is doing "good or acting "properly," but really they are just overzealous and legally inappropriate. Other times, police officers flagrantly disregard the law and their directive. In either case, the people that are caught in the crossfire (sometimes literally) can suffer immensely.

Those who suffer due to police misconduct or police brutality shouldn't do so in silence or in vain. But it's also not about "getting even." It is about upholding the law, protecting your rights and achieving justice so that you can move on with your life without this event weighing you down.
