Not all head injuries are TBIs, but all can be costly

It's estimated that 1.5 million people suffer brain injuries every year. That's according to the website

The causes of those injuries are almost too many to count. Motor vehicle accidents are a significant source. Very often negligence plays a factor in such accidents and in those instances, victims should not hesitate to discuss their situations with an experienced attorney to see what their options for seeking compensation may be.

Too often, athletes are allowed to return to activity too soon after being hurt and that is another source. And while not all of such injuries result in severe disability, a fair number of them do. WebMD says the cost of lost productivity and extra medical care required for a victim of brain trauma can range between $45 billion and $60 billion a year.

The spectrum of possible brain injuries runs the gamut from mild concussion to severe traumatic brain injury. Mild injury may result in just headaches. But memory issues, confusion or nausea are symptoms as well and the appearance of any of those issues should prompt immediate medical attention.

According to a report by two doctors published by Science Direct, TBI is a leading cause of brain injury mortality. But they say it can also be a main contributor to other significant health problems that can last for extended periods of time.

They note that almost 80 percent of individuals who suffer TBI, whether it is mild to moderate, tend to suffer symptoms for months after the initial trauma. The more serious injuries can require major rehabilitation regimens. And even then, life as it may have been may never be the same.

With such dire consequences, the need to protect your rights and consider options about how to meet victims' needs becomes apparent.
