The dangerous driving violation that nearly 10 percent of New York City drivers commit

Anyone who drives in New York City has likely experienced a fair amount of frustration while attempting to navigate the city's congested streets. Traffic jams in the city are a common occurrence, especially during the morning and evening rush hours as city residents and commuters attempt to get to and from work.

From sharing the road with buses, delivery trucks and taxi cabs to dealing with bad drivers and uncooperative traffic signals, New York City's commuting drudgery is enough to drive drivers mad. A recent study reveals the dangerous lengths that some city drivers are going to in an attempt to shave a couple minutes off their commutes.

For the study, students from Hunter College observed the driving behaviors of drivers at 50 intersections throughout Brooklyn, Queens, Manhattan and the Bronx. Their observations revealed some disturbing trends as nearly one out of every 10 drivers disregarded or failed to notice the traffic signals and ran red lights.

The Federal Highway Administration cites "red-light running" as the "most common cause of urban crashes in the U.S.," accounting for thousands of preventable injuries and deaths each year. Drivers who are distracted and simply blow through traffic signals or who choose to intentionally do so; put the safety and lives of other drivers, passengers, bicyclists and pedestrians in jeopardy.

New York City residents, commuters or tourists who have been involved in an accident in which a driver ran a red light, failed to yield the right of way or committed some other illegal traffic infraction may choose to take legal action. An attorney can advocate on one's behalf and assist in the recovery of compensation.
