Why aggressive drivers are so dangerous

When driving in New York City, being timid or indecisive can be a serious handicap. In fact, when it comes to navigating rush-hour traffic, New York City drivers are known for being bold and aggressive. There are, however, times when certain driving behaviors that are readily associated with aggressive driving can pose serious safety dangers to other drivers, passengers, bicyclists and pedestrians.

Tailgating, speeding, darting in and out of traffic, shouting, horn-honking and obscene gestures are just a few of the dangerous driving and other behaviors in which aggressive drivers often engage. Additionally, in a previous post, we detailed how a recent study revealed that roughly 10 percent of drivers in the city run red lights.

For drivers who can identify with and have engaged in some or all of the behaviors outlined above, it's important to change one's attitude and driving habits. Aggressive drivers who speed through red lights, weave in and out of traffic lanes, tailgate and fail to yield the right of way to other drivers and pedestrians are responsible for causing thousands of traffic accidents each year.

In cases where an individual encounters an aggressive driver, it's best to remain a safe distance away and avoid any type of confrontation. If an individual believes that a driver may be dangerous or that his or her actions pose a serious safety risk to other motorists and pedestrians, it’s important to call 911 and report the driver's actions.

For individuals who have suffered injuries in traffic accidents caused by aggressive drivers, it's important to explore one's legal options.
