Childhood deaths from car accidents are too common

All motor vehicle accidents are serious, but when one of the occupants of an involved vehicle is a child, the seriousness is increased. Sadly, car accidents are a leading cause of childhood deaths. Using car seats and booster seats properly can help to keep children safe during an accident.

When it comes to infants, using a car seat properly can reduce the risk of death by 71 percent in a motor vehicle accident. For toddlers that risk reduction is 54 percent. Older children who are in boosster seats have a risk reduction of around 45 percent. Those include children who are 4 years old to 8 years old.

All children who are required to be in a car seat or a booster seat must be secured on all trips. The car seat or booster seat must be properly installed. Once study of 3,500 child safety seats found that 72 percent of these are installed incorrectly. That could mean devastation for a child who should be protected.

One top of ensuring that the child safety seats are properly installed, ensuring that they are installed in the correct place in the vehicle is crucial. Children in safety seats shouldn't be placed in a seat with airbag. They shouldn't be seated in the front seat unless that placement can't be avoided.

When it comes to child restraint systems, proper use is one factor that can affect claims for compensation if you opt to pursue legal action. Even more important is that proper child restraint system use can help to keep the children in your care safe if you are involved in an accident.
