Police misconduct takes many forms

Police misconduct is a broad term for a number of illegal, unprofessional and extremely galling behaviors and actions made by the police. People who are targeted by or subjected to police misconduct, they can suffer serious injuries, deal with extensive and unwarranted criminal charges and live with the physical and emotional distress that all of this causes. Police misconduct is unacceptable and the victims of such abuse need to hold the police responsible for this type of behavior.

So what are some examples of police misconduct? Here are a just a few ways that the police may violate the law and your rights:

  • The police may arrest you under false pretenses, such as failing to have a warrant or probable cause.
  • The police may use extreme or excessive force when dealing with you.
  • The police may not respect your basic rights, such as violating your Fourth Amendment rights (illegal search and seizure).
  • The police may violate basic protocols and rules that pertain to a proper investigation into a criminal matter.

There is no place for this type of behavior by the police. We are supposed to have trust in our police force, and when they act in these ways, we inherently lose trust in an institution that is supposed to protect us -- not harm us.

We at Ross and Hill are committed to protecting your rights and holding the police responsible when they act in violent, extreme or illegal ways. If you have been victimized by police misconduct, please consult with us.
