Multiple allegations of excessive force against Trenton police

Two different lawsuits have been filed against the Trenton Police Department for excessive force. One of the lawsuits alleges that a man was accosted by a police officer in a deli even though the individual had not engaged in any illegal activity. The man was tackled and assaulted by the police officer, and after breaking free, the officer found it wise to pull out his firearm and shoot at the individual. The person filing the lawsuit was not struck by any bullets. Eventually he was tackled again and suffered injuries from the police officers that tackled him.

The other incident that warranted a lawsuit involves a man who was arrested on drug charges. He was beaten at the police headquarters where he was being held. He claims it was unwarranted, while the police are saying that the man resisted police officers.

The allegations made in these lawsuits are serious and cast a cloud of uncertainty over the Trenton Police Department. Do they have a problem with their officers using excessive force? It seems that there is a problem here with either the training that these officers receive or the behavior of the people that the police department recruits.

It will be interesting to see how these lawsuits play out in the coming months. The police wield amazing power. When they misuse that power, they should be held accountable for their actions by the people who suffered at their hands.
