Woman breaks ankle on university grounds, loses financial aid

A woman who used to attend Florida A&M University is suing the school after she broke her ankle while walking back to her dormitory. The fall happened on a pathway that was uneven and maintained by the school. A more direct route to her dorm was blocked off by a locked gate.

As a result of the fall and her resulting injury, the woman had to drop out of school for some time. Florida A&M responded by revoking her financial aid. This is all it takes to turn your life upside down: a cracked sidewalk, an uneven pathway, or a poorly-maintained walkway. These dangerous conditions can cause you to suffer a serious injury that can impact your life in ways both small and big.

The woman is suing Florida A&M for failing to provide or maintain a safe walking path. The lawsuit also claims that the fact that a locked gate was necessary indicates heavy foot traffic, and as such the university should have been quicker to react to the dangerous condition.

It would be nice if all companies, universities, businesses and other interested parties maintained their premises in an immaculate fashion. However, that isn't the world that we live in. Building break down, sidewalks crack and slippery surfaces can randomly occur. When these dangerous conditions exist and they cause an innocent person or patron to suffer injuries, the people responsible for the premises need to be held accountable.
